Hotel Price Categories for Rural Maine Hotels

The hotels on the Rate Table and the Interactive Map are grouped into color coded price categories based on their average room rates.  The average rate for each hotel is calculated from the average of it's high and low room rates observed over a period of one year. 

Since Rockport, ME is a small town in rural Maine, it's rate classification is based on 99 hotels in rural Maine that are oustide the metropolitan areas.  The latest rate analysis for rural Maine hotels was performed on March 24, 2008.  The current classification breaks based on this analysis are as follows:

Hotel Rate Table for Rockport, Maine

The table below shows Rockport, Maine hotels listed from the highest average rate to the lowest average rate.  The hotels are color coded according to the Hotel Price Categories described above.  The table shows the high and low rates recorded for each hotel.  It also shows the annual average high and low rates for comparison.  The "Low Dif" and "High Dif" columns show the difference between the posted current rates and the annual average rates.  The table may be sorted by clicking the column headers.

Update Rates

Compare Rates

To compare rates between hotels, click the column headers to sort by the average rates, low rates, or high rates.

Identify Low Rates

See the difference between the current posted rates and average rates to identify hotels with below average rates.  Negative values indicate below average rates.  Click the "Low Dif" and "High Dif" column headers to sort the values and see the lowest differences. 

Click the average rate values (Ave Rate column) to see rate trend graphs for each hotel.  See how the current rates compare to the rate history for each hotel.  Consider that large differences in the high rates may indicate limited availability of the more expensive rooms, and low rates may simply indicate an opening in low rate rooms.  Rates may also vary with seasons and change for special events.

Launching The Map

Interactive Hotel List

The Hotel Locator Map shows the location of hotels in Rockport, Maine and adjacent areas.  It allows you to zoom in, zoom out, center, and select hotels for identification.  The map includes an interactive list of hotels that works with the map.  As you zoom in on your area of interest, the list of hotels on the sidebar will adjust to match the hotels you see on the map.  This feature allows you to focus the list of hotels for a specific area of Rockport, ME.

The hotel markers on the map are colored and numbered to match the hotel list.   The colors indicate the price range categories calculated for the hotels in Rockport, ME.  If you are interested in only one price range, use the price category check boxes beneath the hotel list to turn off the price ranges you don't need.

Hotel Rate Range and Sorting Options

For screens set to 1024 x 768 or greater, sort buttons are available on the map interface to sort the hotel list by name, by high rates, or by low rates.  When sorting the hotels by high or low rates, the hotels will remain grouped in the three price categories and each category will be sorted separately.  In addition to sorting the hotels by high or low rates, you may turn hotel rate ranges on or off by using the price category check boxes beneath the hotel list.

After you have focused the hotel list, set the dates for your reservation with the Reservation Dates selection box on the left side of the map. Set the dates for your stay, the number of adults, and the number of children, then click the Update Rates button at the top of the map's hotel list to begin the hotel rate search.  The search routine will step through each hotel and search multiple hotel reservation systems through Interactive Hotel Solutions to find the lowest current rates.

The current rates and the annual average rates are presented for comparison.  The current rates are presented in bold text and the average rates are displayed in small text  ( low | high )  above the current rates.  Compare the current high and low rates to their average values to identify below average rates.

Hotel Reservations

The links under each hotel provide access to the hotel information and rate pages.  The rate links will generate rate pages for the number of occupants and dates that you set in the Reservation Dates selection box.  Hotel rooms may be booked through the rate pages.

Hotel Rate Analysis and Classification Details

The March 24, 2008 rate analysis for Rockport, Maine hotels is based on the average room rates of 99 hotels in rural Maine oustide the metropolitan areas.  The average rate for each hotel is calculated from the average of it's high and low room rates observed over a period of one year.  The rates range between the following values:

Lowest Average Room Rate:  $59 - Maineline Motel
Highest Average Room Rate:  $378 - Lodge At Moosehead Lake

The graph on the right shows the typical shape of a rate distribution for a wide range of room rates.  The colored areas depict the price breaks used to classify the hotels.  Rates greater than two standard deviations above the mean for all values are considered high end outliners and are removed from the price break calculations.

For the March 24, 2008 analysis, the resulting mean room rate for rural Maine hotels is $137 and the standard deviation is $56.

Hotels with average rates greater than one standard deviation above the mean are categorized as deluxe.  One standard deviation above the mean is $193, so Rockport hotels with an average rate higher than $193 are classified as deluxe hotels ( magenta ) on the map.

Hotels with average rates falling in the lower half of the range below the mean are categorized as budget.  The rate halfway between the low rate and the mean rate is $98, so Rockport hotels with an average rate lower than $98 are classified as budget hotels (green ) on the map.

Everything in between is categorized as moderate priced hotels, so Rockport hotels with average room rates greater the $98 and less that $193 are classified as moderate priced hotels ( cyan ) on the map.
