Hotel Price Categories for Rural Colorado Hotels

The hotels on the Rate Table and the Interactive Map are grouped into color coded price categories based on their average room rates.  The average rate for each hotel is calculated from the average of it's high and low room rates observed over a period of one year. 

Since Steamboat Springs, CO is a small town in rural Colorado, it's rate classification is based on 334 hotels in rural Colorado that are oustide the metropolitan areas.  The latest rate analysis for rural Colorado hotels was performed on March 24, 2008.  The current classification breaks based on this analysis are as follows:

See the difference between the current posted rates and average rates to identify hotels with below average rates.  Negative values indicate below average rates.  Click the "Low Dif" and "High Dif" column headers to sort the values and see the lowest differences. 

Click the average rate values (Ave Rate column) to see rate trend graphs for each hotel.  See how the current rates compare to the rate history for each hotel.  Consider that large differences in the high rates may indicate limited availability of the more expensive rooms, and low rates may simply indicate an opening in low rate rooms.  Rates may also vary with seasons and change for special events.

Interactive Hotel List

Set the dates for your stay, the number of adults, and the number of children, then click the Update Rates button at the top of the map's hotel list to begin the hotel rate search.  The search routine will step through each hotel and search multiple hotel reservation systems through Interactive Hotel Solutions to find the lowest current rates.

The current rates and the annual average rates are presented for comparison.  The current rates are presented in bold text and the average rates are displayed in small text  ( low | high )  above the current rates.  Compare the current high and low rates to their average values to identify below average rates.

The links under each hotel provide access to the hotel information and rate pages.  The rate links will generate rate pages for the number of occupants and dates that you set in the Reservation Dates selection box.  Hotel rooms may be booked through the rate pages.

Hotel Rate Analysis and Classification Details

The March 24, 2008 rate analysis for Steamboat Springs, Colorado hotels is based on the average room rates of 334 hotels in rural Colorado oustide the metropolitan areas.  The average rate for each hotel is calculated from the average of it's high and low room rates observed over a period of one year.  The rates range between the following values:

Lowest Average Room Rate:  $0 - Grand Lodge Crested Butte
Highest Average Room Rate:  $6522 - Villahotel La Niche

The graph on the right shows the typical shape of a rate distribution for a wide range of room rates.  The colored areas depict the price breaks used to classify the hotels.  Rates greater than two standard deviations above the mean for all values are considered high end outliners and are removed from the price break calculations.

For the March 24, 2008 analysis, the resulting mean room rate for rural Colorado hotels is $209 and the standard deviation is $179.

Hotels with average rates greater than one standard deviation above the mean are categorized as deluxe.  One standard deviation above the mean is $389, so Steamboat Springs hotels with an average rate higher than $389 are classified as deluxe hotels ( magenta ) on the map.

Hotels with average rates falling in the lower half of the range below the mean are categorized as budget.  The rate halfway between the low rate and the mean rate is $105, so Steamboat Springs hotels with an average rate lower than $105 are classified as budget hotels (green ) on the map.

Everything in between is categorized as moderate priced hotels, so Steamboat Springs hotels with average room rates greater the $105 and less that $389 are classified as moderate priced hotels ( cyan ) on the map.
